Dissecting Frog

Posted by Mae Yeap at Wednesday, September 18, 2013
How should I say, a new experience? It was quite thrilling but cruel at the same time. We've never thought about it from the start, but our Biology teacher asked us during this particular lesson, whether to dissect frog or not, and yeah, of course everyone would say that. You know Facebook right? There's always photos of dissected frogs that those Science students did, I felt scared and disgusted seeing it. Those time I swore not to enroll into Science Stream so that I need not to do that experiment, and how funny it is that I am now one of them, looking forward to this day - 18th of September.

It's not really a scary experience if you got used to it. Okay, I know that sounds bad? But what to do, I study Biology, and that's what it means. The purpose of this experiment is to study the inner structure of a frog, as theirs are so similar to ours. As usual, safety precautions have to be taken as well as preparing ingredients and materials before we start. Before entering the laboratory, we were observing the frogs' eyes through the plastic bag in a plastic basin our friends were carrying. Can't believe that we are going to dissect these small creatures. I feel so sorry for them. T^T As we wore our masks and gloves ( not sure the gloves are new or old ones, some are smelly and there's even ants on it =3= ), Puan Rosam and a few laboratory assistants helped and guided us.

Everyone was smiling broadly under the masks. ^_^

Hooi Yee was the first one to touch the frogs I guess? She mustered up all her courage to lift the frog but failed to do so. Kah Man then bravely took the frog out and inserted it into a big glass jar, with chloroform-soaked cotton covering it's nostril. The frog was jumping here and there so actively a few seconds ago, but soon after it breathed in the chloroform, the frog lost it's consciousness ( it was suffering for awhile before being completely anesthetized. =[ ).

Jumping here and there so actively. ^^
( Not sure of the video's blurry after being uploaded )

We "poured" it out onto the ice and after we pinned it, here we go! ( The frog of the group next to us was still moving when they were dissecting, OH MY GOD WE'RE REALLY SORRY!! @@ ) But before we really start, we were touching the frog's skin, here and there. xD The skin was quite hard to cut apart, but I somehow managed to while other members can't, guess that I have talent after all. xD

Wei Ling and I went to "observe" other groups' frog frequently while our group members were taking turns dissecting. Compared to all the groups, group 1's ( Audrey, Kah Man and the others ) frog was really healthy, its lungs are bright red and they are like balloons. Guess theirs was the most successful one. ( Kah Man was really enjoying herself there. =P ) The group next to us was quite unsuccessful, I think they cut its vein. =/

Finally it's time to pack up. Teacher told us to throw them into the pastic bag but we felt really bad and sorry for them. Weeks before, I asked my cousin sister, and she said that she poked its heart for it to stop suffering. I told that to my friends and we were hesitating. Finally, Kah Man poked it but that frog was not dead yet, so she poked for a few times. She even played with its organs and "stir" it. T^T It was so cruel and I can't stand it anymore. My tears started rolling down as I reached my limit seeing that poor frog. ( I think Puan Rosam saw me. >< ) Anyway, the experiment is carried out smoothly with our teacher and the assistants' guidance.

FROGS, PLEASE REST IN PEACE. =(
