One day, Miss Wong, our homeroom teacher as well as our Add Maths teacher came in our class before our examination starts. She called a few of us to her desk and asked us whether we have intention to join an annual Maths Marathon organised by HELP. No need for us to worry about the participation fees ( RM30/team = RM10/student ) and transport problem, because she will sponsor us. She said she will open this only for 5 Maju, so that we can go and gain some knowledge there, and that she did the same for 5 Maju 2013. She said that we won't be able to answer their questions as she also couldn't answer them herself, she just wanted us to 见见世面. xD So we brought the information back and decided to take part in it after discussing.
This is the brochure, and here's a link to the info of 2013's marathon ( Couldn't find 2014's ) :
There's three player in a group, each player are required to participate in different competition in Part 1. The first player need to answer 40 questions based on secondary school's mathematics syllabus; The second player need to complete a set of 4 sudoku questions; The third player need to answer 40 IQ questions. All the players will sit for the test simultaneously and the appointed time is 45 minutes. If your team is one of the best 3 teams from Part 1, then you will need to take part in Part 2 where quizzes will be given to determine the first, second and third prize winners. BUT THE CONDITION THAT WORRIES US IS : NO CALCULATOR IS ALLOWED. TT
Three positions, it's really hard to decided which I should take. When I was busy thinking about which player I should be, Chou Tong straight away asked Kah Man and Hooi Yee to be in a group with her. I heard, but I didn't say anything about it. So that makes me on another team with Zhie Yung and Xing Ling. Of course, I was hurt by her action, and I was feeling so down for that whole day. In the end, I decided to be the first player, because my skill in sudoku wasn't good and I don't think I can handle IQ. xD Zhie Yung chose to be the second player and Xing Ling the third player. For another team, Chou Tong was the first player, Hooi Yee the second while Kah Man the third.

The day of marathon was Wednesday, everybody wore their own uniform while only the six of us wore school uniform. xD I reached school late and they were already sitting at the canteen waiting for Miss Wong. We started our journey to Help Academy with the help of Waze and arrived there around 8 in the morning. Still early, so we went to the building opposite then into Starbucks then to the hawker in front of the academy. Then we went in and registered, and waited before a student came to guide us to the hall where the opening is held.
My pass as Player 1, also the team leader.
We were team N0008 while they were team N0009.
A group photo of both team before heading to the hall.
At the hall, we sat at the center third row and waited for really long, we took photos, go online and Xing Ling showed us her graduation dress that she bought online. The back of the dress was open, so we told her we don't think it's allowed. While waiting, Zhie Yung dozed off lol. Miss Wong kept chatting with a female teacher from another school and didn't pay attention to us. They then started the event with opening speeches by then emcee and a professor. Then they told us about the rules and regulation and it's finally time for us to move to our respective location for our test. OMG! =O
A shot while waiting for the event to start.
In the room, I sat at the second seat on third row, while Chou Tong at the third seat. You know what, they stated that the questions are from SECONDARY SCHOOL'S MATHEMATICS SYLLABUS, but the questions were So. Damn. Hard. There's even add maths questions. How to answer then I don't have calculator lol. I couldn't even answer the questions and I took really long to answer just one question. In the end, I just managed to answer 10+ questions and times up! And I was really amazed by the guy sitting beside me, the first seat. He's a student from Chong Hwa Independent, and while I was thinking the solutions, he just keep calculating and writing answers, with the speed of light weih. When we handed in our papers, I saw his answer sheet was full of answers while mine and Chou Tong's...... So embarrassing. xD
Then it's lunch time! We had our lunch in our room ( they said to eat in our own test room but we didn't bother about it xD ) and then followed the guide to a science laboratory. They showed us their 3D project, which you download an app, scan the QR code then hold your camera in front of the special drawing on a paper, it will turn into 3D in your phone where you can rotate and zoom it. There's drawing of chemical structure, bone and so on.
Back to the hall, they announced the top three teams and of course, we're not included. All team members of the three teams sat on stage and each team were given a board and marker. With the questions showed on the three monitors in front of them and projected for us to see, each team needed to write their answer on the board simultaneously, with only 1 minute for each question. We have totally no idea on how they answer the add maths question ( permutation and combination ) without using calculator, and what's really amazing was, the teams can answer a question using 10 seconds the least. @@ Applause~ SMK Chong Hwa Independent was announced as the winner with the highest points from the quizzes. Prizes and certs were given to them, then the event ended with all the team leaders going up the stage to get their teams' certs.
Miss Wong fetched us back as promised. She dropped off Hooi Yee, Chou Tong and I at Jalan Pahang McDonald's, Zhie Yung at Hospital Besar KL and lastly Kah Man and Xing Ling at KLCC. Both Chou Tong and I waited for our parents on the second floor, and I showed her my photos taken on the second day of Betong Trip ( secret, shhh ). When I was going back, Chou Tong's grandfather still haven't arrived yet. I was quite worried about her waiting alone there, and she's scared that her granddad ( no cellphone ) might go to school to fetch her, but I couldn't accompany her because we were late to fetch my mum.
Photos taken in the car on our journey back. Zhie Yung sat in the front seat so she couldn't join in the fun. xD
Certs and souvenirs from HELP.
A receipt they put into my teams' envelop which I handed to Miss Wong on the next day.
It was indeed a great experience participating in this marathon, thank you Miss Wong for providing us with this opportunity and for sponsoring us! ^_^
